GBIF Taxonomic Backbone & Wikipedia Registry Profile

HABITAT. — This species was usually collected on grass at a height not exceeding 0.5 - 1.5 m (Fig. 2 D). During the day, resting animals can be found above water on plants (Lamotte & Xavier 1981; SchiØtz 1967, 1999). Males call at night, usually on high grasses, a few meters from the pond edges (Rödel et al. 2006). Afrixalus weidholzi is a common species which has a wide range in West African drier savannah zones (Rödel 2000; Padial et al. 2013) and occurs occasionally in the same habitats as A. vittiger.
Biology & Conservation

Ecologically, the conservation status of Weidholz's Banana Frog is officially designated as Least Concern. Current field registries estimate a global population composed of an unquantified number of individuals, making habitat preservation critical to maintaining their wild populations.

It is typically endemic to grassland, freshwater, showing great physiological synergy with its surroundings. In terms of dietary preferences, it relies primarily on a diet of flying insects, forest spiders, and crawling invertebrates. It exhibits specialized adaptations centered around a nocturnal activity pattern, optimizing its energy conservation and interactions within its native ecosystem. The species has a typical natural lifespan of approximately 6 years, allowing it to adapt and mature through structured generational cycles.

Ongoing biological monitoring and ecological advocacy emphasize the importance of protecting this species. The stability of its food chain and the prevention of fragmentation in its primary range are vital for the continued survival of Weidholz's Banana Frog.
